Vehicle Storage Do’s and Don’ts
Your vehicle is a big investment. When storing it, you want to make sure it’s kept in tip-top shape while you’re away. In this blog, we offer helpful tips to use when storing your car, boat, motorcycle or RV.
Do: Give It a Bath
Dirt, debris and salt can ruin your vehicle’s paint job and cause corrosion and rust. Before storing, wash the exterior of your vehicle (don’t forget to include the undercarriage), dry carefully, and apply wax.
Don’t: Leave it Uncovered
When storing your vehicle outside, protect it from wind, rain and hot sun with a breathable cover—after washing and waxing, of course.
Don’t: Forget to Check the Fluids
If you’re planning on storing your vehicle for several months, make sure the coolant and other fluids are topped off. While you’re at it, change the oil and filter so it’s ready to drive when you retrieve it.
Do: Remove the Battery
It’s unlikely your vehicle’s battery will hold a charge if it sits for weeks or months attached to your car’s electrical system, so remove the battery and store it in a climate-controlled area.
Do: Use Jack Stands
Your tires will warp if parked in one position for several months. Use jack stands to keep your tires in (round) shape, so your vehicle is ready for the road after storage.
Don’t: Make it a Nest for Pests
Food crumbs are an invitation for mice and other rodents to make a home in your vehicle. Make sure to vacuum the interior and wipe down upholstery with a mild cleaner. Stuff rags or aluminum foil in the end of your tailpipe to prevent rodents and insects from camping out in your exhaust system—just be sure to remove the barrier before you hit the road!
Do: Remove the Wiper Blades
If your vehicle sits for too long, the wiper blades will deteriorate and stick to the windshield. Remove them from your vehicle before storing it.
Don’t: Engage the Parking Brake
An engaged parking brake can freeze in place and become difficult to disengage. If you’re worried about your vehicle rolling, use jack stands and/or wheel chocks.
Do: Store It in a Secure Facility
Last, but not least, choose a storage facility that will keep your vehicle safe. Ask if your vehicle storage facility offers the following:
- On-site management
- Security lighting
- Perimeter fencing
- Controlled and monitored access
- 24-hour video surveillance
This combination of features will keep your vehicle secure and give you peace of mind.
