Helpful Tips for Storing Appliances

Appliances make modern living a breeze, but when storing them, you need to exercise caution and diligence. Refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, washers and dryers are expensive; you want to make sure your investment is protected while in storage. In this blog, we offer helpful tips for storing appliances.

Refrigerators

A refrigerator is one of the most difficult items to prepare for storage. Defrost it at least three days before storing it in your self storage unit. Drain the ice maker and water supply line and allow them to dry. Clean the interior walls, shelves and other internal parts with a mild detergent. Always transport a refrigerator upright, ideally with an appliance dolly. Leave the doors slightly ajar when storing your refrigerator to prevent mold and mildew growth.

Dishwashers

Run your dishwasher through a complete cycle before storing it. Add a cup of chlorine bleach to kill mold and bacteria. Afterwards, disconnect the supply hoses and thoroughly clean and dry them. Wait at least 24 hours for your dishwasher to air dry before storing it. Wrap the supply hoses in towels before placing them inside the dishwasher. Leave the door ajar three or four inches and cover the dishwasher with a sheet.

Microwaves

Remove the glass carousel from your microwave and thoroughly clean it. Wipe down the inside of the microwave. If you still have the original packaging, repack the microwave. If you don’t have the original packaging, your self-storage provider can provide a box to fit your microwave. The door of the microwave should be locked shut and the power cord taped to its side.

Washer and Dryers

Like refrigerators, properly preparing a washer and dryer for storage is key. Before storing your washer, add a cup of chlorine bleach and run it through a complete cycle while empty to kill mold and bacteria. Remove and clean the dryer’s lint trap. Thoroughly clean the inside and outside of your washer and dryer and allow them to dry. Remove the supply lines and make sure they are dry before storing them inside the appliances. Keep the doors slightly ajar to facilitate air flow And cover with a sheet.

By following these tips, you can make sure your appliances are in tip-top shape when it’s time to take them out of storage.
