Vehicle Storage Tips

Whether on a temporary, semi-permanent, or seasonal basis, there are times when you need a secure place to store your vehicle. And when you store your car, motorcycle, or RV for an extended period of time, you want to make sure it’s in good working condition when you need it. Follow these car storage tips and you’ll be road-ready in no time at all!

Clean inside and out

Even though it won’t be on the road, you still want to make sure your vehicle looks good when it comes out of storage. Tree sap, dirt and other road debris can permanently damage paint, so a thorough car wash before storing is a good idea. A wax job isn’t a bad idea either. Vacuum and clean the inside as well to prevent critters from setting up camp while you’re away. A handful of mothballs in the trunk also keep vermin away.

If you own an RV, look for a vehicle storage facility with a RV dump station. In addition to enabling a convenient method for cleaning and washing your RV, a dump station allows you to empty your black and grey water tanks prior to storage.

Top off your fluids

Before you bring your vehicle to a storage facility, make sure that you’re up-to-date on scheduled maintenance. Check the following:

  • transmission fluid
  • brake fluid
  • cooling system

If storing your vehicle for more than a couple of weeks, you’ll also want to change the oil and filter.

Disconnect the battery

A vehicle battery won’t stay charged if it’s not used on a regular basis. Disconnect your vehicle’s battery and connect it to a trickle charger or battery tender while in storage. This is also the perfect opportunity to clean corrosive material off of your battery terminals.

Preserve your tires

The tires on your vehicle will deflate slowly over time. Before storing fill the tires on your vehicle to the maximum volume. If you are storing a motorbike, place it on its center stand.

Use a cover

When storing your vehicle outdoors, use a cover to protect it from the elements and sunlight. Place a plastic cover or steel wool in the exhaust pipe to prevent rodent and insect infestation. Remember to remove it before firing up the engine again, though!

Choose the right vehicle storage facility

Your vehicle is one of your primary investments. While you’re away, you need a trusted pair of eyes to look after it. The right vehicle storage facility protects your car, motorcycle, or RV from theft and ensures it remains in good condition. Look for a vehicle storage facility that offers:

  • security lighting
  • perimeter fencing
  • controlled and monitored access
  • 24-hour video surveillance
